Partner Emeritus (Retired 2022)
Professional Background
Richard Rand, K.C., retired in 2022 after a distinguished legal career spanning nearly five decades. Mr. Rand practiced primarily in family law and professional discipline cases, having handled matters with the Law Society of Alberta, The Alberta Teachers' Association, The College of Alberta Psychologists, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, The Alberta Pharmaceutical Association, The National Hockey League, and the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association. He also conducted private arbitration work and was available for Rule 4.16 dispute resolution processes.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Rand's practice included extensive involvement in criminal law, conducting numerous jury trials and defending serious charges including murder. While his practice always included divorce and matrimonial matters, the increased volume of family law work caused it to become his primary area of practice since the mid-1980s.
Appointed Queen's Counsel in 1998, Mr. Rand has been extensively involved in professional legal education and administration throughout his career, serving in leadership roles with the Legal Aid Society of Alberta and various Law Society committees.
